Here's where to sail, when to go, and how to arrive in the condition you deserve.
The Caribbean: the benchmark for a reason
The Caribbean is the world's most popular bareboat charter region, and the reputation is entirely earned. Over 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays spread across reliably warm water, with trade winds that blow at a steady 15–25 knots from the east almost every afternoon from December through April. It's forgiving, it's beautiful, and the sailing infrastructure is genuinely excellent.
The British Virgin Islands are the crown jewel — Road Town on Tortola is one of the best-organized charter bases in the world, and the passage to Norman Island or the Baths at Virgin Gorda is classic Caribbean sailing. St. Martin offers a split personality: French refinement on one side, Dutch pragmatism on the other, and some of the region's best restaurants on both. The Grenadines are where you go when you're done being social. Bequia, Mustique, the Tobago Cays — quieter, more remote, worth the extra effort.
Getting there from the US: From New York (JFK) or Miami (MIA), you're looking at direct flights to Beef Island (EIS) in the BVI, Princess Juliana (SXM) for St. Martin, or VC Bird International (ANU) for Antigua. Côte d'Azur: when the destination is the lifestyle
The French Riviera isn't where you go to practice sailing. It's where you go because you want to anchor 200 meters off Saint-Tropez, stern-to at the port in Cannes, and watch the world's most expensive yachts maneuver while you eat a proper bouillabaisse. The sailing itself — light winds of 5–15 knots along a sheltered coastline — is genuinely relaxed, which leaves more time for everything else.
Cannes is worth a full day: walk the Croisette, duck into the old town, find a table at La Palme d'Or if you're feeling serious about lunch. The Lérins Islands sit just offshore and offer a completely different atmosphere — quiet monastery on Saint-Honorat, eucalyptus trees, no cars. Nice is best used as your base port given its airport connections. The Alpes-Maritimes backdrop from the water is one of the more quietly spectacular views in the Mediterranean.
Getting there: Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) has strong transatlantic connections via Paris CDG. Air France operates the JFK–CDG–NCE routing in both business class (La Première on long-haul, standard seat for the short hop) and the full-flat La Première cabin on select CDG long-haul departures. Retail JFK–NCE in business runs $4,500–$7,000. Flying through CDG also gives you access to the Air France La Première lounge and the Salon Mosaic business lounge — both genuinely good, with food worth arriving early for. Alternatively, British Airways via LHR into NCE works well if you prefer the Club Suite — BA's new business class seat with direct aisle access is a meaningful upgrade over its predecessor.

Sardinia and Sicily: two very different Italys
Lumping Sardinia and Sicily together is convenient but slightly misleading — they're quite distinct experiences, and choosing between them is worth a deliberate conversation.
Sardinia is where the money goes. The Costa Smeralda has some of the most expensive marina berths in the Mediterranean, a clientele that includes Russian oligarchs, Saudi royals, and tech founders, and water that genuinely looks airbrushed. The La Maddalena Archipelago, protected as a national marine park, is exceptional — seven main islands, restricted access in some areas, and some of the clearest water you'll find anywhere. Alghero, on the northwest coast, has Catalan influences and a medieval center worth an afternoon.
Sicily is wilder, more complex, and — honestly — more interesting. The Aeolian Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage site: Stromboli has an active volcano you can hike at night, Panarea is where the Roman Empresses went to vacation, and Lipari has a proper castle. The Egadi Islands off the western tip of Sicily are almost entirely overlooked by charter crowds. That's a good thing.
The Mistral wind in Sardinia (northwest, 10–20 knots) and the Sirocco in Sicily (southeast, 5–15 knots) give both regions a predictable if occasionally forceful sailing rhythm. The season runs April through October, with May–September being optimal.
Getting there: Palermo (PMO) and Cagliari (CAG) are the main gateways. From the US, most routings connect through Rome FCO or Milan MXP. Alitalia's collapse and ITA Airways' subsequent relaunch means this routing has gotten both messier and, occasionally, cheaper. Delta's Polaris business class on JFK–FCO is a legitimate premium product — the cabin on the A330-900neo features 1-2-1 seating with direct aisle access, and retail on that route runs $4,000–$6,500. Croatia: the Adriatic at its best
Croatia has earned its reputation as one of Europe's premier sailing destinations, and the numbers support the enthusiasm. Over 1,000 islands along 1,800 kilometers of coastline, most of them unspoiled, many of them reachable only by water. The Dalmatian Coast is the main event — Split to Dubrovnik, with the islands of Hvar, Brač, Korčula, and the Kornati National Park spread across the route.
Dubrovnik is unavoidable and genuinely magnificent — walk the walls at dawn before the cruise ships arrive and you'll understand why everyone comes. Hvar Town has become Croatia's answer to Ibiza, for better and worse, but the northern end of Hvar island is quiet, agricultural, and beautiful. Split's Diocletian's Palace is a functioning neighborhood built inside a Roman imperial palace, which is exactly as bizarre and fascinating as it sounds.
The sailing itself rewards the attentive. The afternoon Maestral (northwest, 10–20 knots) is reliable and comfortable. The Bora, which can arrive with very little warning and blow at 40+ knots through the mountain gaps, requires respect and a willingness to stay put when conditions demand it. Most experienced charter sailors consider Croatia more technically engaging than Greece — which is either a selling point or a caveat, depending on your experience level.
Getting there: Dubrovnik (DBV) and Split (SPU) are the primary charter bases. From the US, connections typically route through Frankfurt (LHR), Amsterdam (AMS), or Zurich (ZRH). Lufthansa's business class from JFK to FRA, then a one-hop into DBV, is a frequently booked routing for our clients. Greece: the Cyclades versus the Ionians
Greece offers two fundamentally different sailing experiences, and the choice between the Cyclades and the Ionian Islands tells you a lot about what kind of charter you're after.
The Cyclades — Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos — are iconic for a reason. The Meltemi wind that rips down from the north in July and August reaches 25–30 knots with regularity, which makes the sailing genuinely exciting and the motoring between islands occasionally rough. Santorini's caldera anchorage is one of the great theatrical harbors in the world. Mykonos is relentlessly fashionable. Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades, is the one I'd prioritize: real beaches, actual local life, excellent cheese and wine.
The Ionian Islands — Corfu, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos — are calmer in every sense. Lighter winds (10–20 knots), lush green landscapes instead of white volcanic rock, fewer crowds on the water. Kefalonia's Myrtos Beach is one of the more dramatic pieces of coastline in Europe. Ithaca, Homer's island, gets almost no attention relative to its neighbors. It's excellent.
Getting there: Athens (ATH) is the main hub for both regions. From the US, several airlines fly nonstop to ATH — United (EWR–ATH), American (JFK–ATH, seasonal), and Olympic/Aegean for intra-Greece positioning. United's Polaris business class on the EWR–ATH route is a reliable product; the Boeing 767-300ER configuration on this route is older but functional, with fully flat seats in a 1-2-1 layout. Thailand: the Andaman Sea in dry season
Thailand's Andaman Sea is the most visually arresting sailing region in Southeast Asia. The limestone karsts of Phang Nga Bay jutting vertically out of emerald water, the improbable emerald clarity around the Similan Islands, the quieter northern reaches of the Mu Ko Surin Marine National Park — it's genuinely other-worldly sailing, especially when approached by boat rather than longtail transfer from a resort.
Phuket (HKT) is the charter hub. It's chaotic, noisy, and has excellent marine services. Use it as a base, get out quickly. The Phi Phi Islands are worth seeing but suffer from overtourism during peak months — anchor at dawn or skip them entirely in favor of the Similan Islands, which require a national park permit but reward the effort with some of the region's best snorkeling. Phang Nga Bay is the essential Andaman experience: hire a sea canoe guide in addition to your yacht, and plan a full day.
The sailing window is strict. November through April is the northeast monsoon season — steady 10–20 knot winds, temperatures between 75°F and 95°F, generally excellent conditions. May through October is the southwest monsoon. Strong winds, heavy rain, some operators closing entirely. This is not a region where you push the shoulder season.
Getting there: Phuket (HKT) is well-served from major hubs. From the US, the most common business class routings go through Dubai (DXB) on Emirates, Doha (DOH) on Qatar Airways, or Singapore (SIN) on Singapore Airlines. Qatar's QSuite — available on DOH–HKT — is the finest business class product currently flying. Australia: the Whitsundays, properly done
The Whitsunday Islands sit inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and offer sailing that most Australians have never experienced. Seventy-four islands, the majority uninhabited, with Whitehaven Beach — nine kilometers of pure white silica sand, ranked among the best beaches on the planet — accessible only by boat or seaplane. Hamilton Island is the main inhabited base: slightly resort-ified but with proper marina facilities and a regional airport (HTI) that accepts jets.
The Great Barrier Reef adds an obvious snorkeling and diving dimension that no other charter region on this list can match. The dry season (May–October) brings southeast trade winds of 10–20 knots — consistent, manageable, perfect for a catamaran charter with a family. The wet season (November–April) brings cyclone risk and should be avoided without serious local guidance.
One honest caveat: the Whitsundays feel slightly isolated compared to Mediterranean destinations. Provisioning is good on Hamilton Island but limited elsewhere. Budget extra time for planning your passage to ensure you're not caught out in the national marine park areas without the right permits.
Getting there: Fly into Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) or Hamilton Island (HTI) from Brisbane (BNE) or Sydney (SYD). For the transpacific positioning flight, Los Angeles (LAX) is your primary gateway. French Polynesia: Bora Bora and beyond
French Polynesia is the most remote destination on this list and the most rewarding for it. The Society Islands — Bora Bora, Moorea, Raiatea, Huahine, Tahaa — form a logical island-hopping circuit of about 250 nautical miles, doable in two weeks, better done in three. The lagoons here are genuinely extraordinary: calm, brilliantly clear, rich with coral and fish, ringed by motus where you can anchor in complete solitude.
Raiatea is worth emphasizing because most travelers skip it entirely in favor of Bora Bora. That's a mistake. Raiatea is the cultural and spiritual center of Polynesia, home to the Taputapuātea marae (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and has a proper charter base with decent provisioning. It's also the most practical place to start and finish a charter, with Raiatea Airport (RFP) accepting inter-island flights from Papeete (PPT).
Bora Bora is legitimately beautiful. It's also legitimately expensive — plan for $100+ per night for a decent mooring buoy inside the lagoon, and factor that into your overall budget.
Getting there: All flights funnel through Papeete (PPT) on Tahiti, served by Air Tahiti Nui directly from Los Angeles (LAX) and Paris (CDG). Air Tahiti Nui's business class — "Poerava" — is a genuine long-haul flat-bed product with direct aisle access on their A340 and A380 services. It's not QSuite, but it's comfortable and the Polynesian service aesthetic is genuinely warm. Retail LAX–PPT in business runs $4,500–$7,500. Spain — the Balearics: Ibiza gets the headlines, Formentera gets the best water
The Balearic Islands are the Mediterranean's most versatile charter destination. Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera — four islands, four completely different personalities, all within comfortable day-sailing range of each other.
Mallorca is the largest and most varied: the Serra de Tramuntana mountains in the north (another UNESCO listing), Palma's impressive Gothic cathedral, and more secluded coves than you can realistically visit in a two-week charter. Menorca is quieter, more rural, with a coastline full of gin-clear calas accessible only by sea. Ibiza earns its reputation for nightlife but is also, around its northern and eastern coasts, genuinely beautiful and relatively undiscovered. Formentera is the one that serious Mediterranean sailors talk about — shallow turquoise water over white sand that looks Caribbean and costs European prices.
The sailing conditions are excellent: north winds of 10–20 knots during summer, warm temperatures, excellent marina infrastructure throughout. Palma (PMI) is the main charter hub, and the marina facilities there are among the best in the Mediterranean.
Getting there: Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) connects to most major European hubs. From the US, the most direct business class routing goes through Madrid (MAD) on Iberia, whose business class — Iberia Business on the A350 — is a consistently underrated product with fully flat seats in a 1-2-1 layout. Indonesia: Komodo and Raja Ampat for the serious traveler
Indonesia is not a beginner's charter destination. The currents around Komodo National Park can run at 8 knots through narrow passages, tidal timing is critical, and Raja Ampat sits at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago with logistics that require genuine planning. That said, these are two of the most biologically extraordinary places on the planet, and experienced sailors who make the effort come back changed.
Komodo National Park is 1,733 square kilometers of protected ocean, home to the largest reptile on earth (the Komodo dragon, best observed at Rinca rather than the more tourist-heavy Komodo Island), Pink Beach — genuinely pink, a function of red coral fragments mixing with white sand — and Manta Point, where large aggregations of manta rays gather year-round. The diving and snorkeling are world-class.
Raja Ampat is for those who genuinely want to disappear. The four main islands — Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo — form the most biodiverse marine environment on earth. Coral coverage that was decimated elsewhere survived here almost intact. The sailing requires attention to the charts and a conservative approach to unfamiliar passages, but the isolation is the point.
Getting there: Bali (DPS) is the most practical gateway for Komodo charters; Sorong (SOQ) is the jump-off for Raja Ampat. Both require connections from major hubs. From the US, Singapore Airlines via SIN to DPS is the gold standard — Singapore's Suites first class on the A380 (SIN–DPS is a short hop, but positioning via SIN on long-haul is where the real product sits) and their regional business class is reliable.
