American Express opened the first Centurion Lounge at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in 2013. The network expanded rapidly over the following decade as American Express repositioned its premium cards around lounge access as a headline benefit, competing directly with airline-branded lounges and prompting other card issuers, including Chase and Capital One, to build similar networks.
How It Works
Access is tied to cardmembership, not airline or ticket class. Cardholders must present a same-day boarding pass along with an eligible American Express card. The Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card grant entry along with a limited number of complimentary guests; additional guests typically incur a per-person fee. The top-tier Centurion (Black) Card offers broader guest allowances. Lounges feature full bars with craft cocktails, seasonal menus from partner chefs, wellness or spa rooms in select locations, family rooms, and dedicated workspaces with charging stations.
