Flydubai business class review: better than you think, but only if you book the right seat

Flydubai gets underestimated constantly. Based in Dubai and launched in 2009, it carries the "low-cost carrier" label like an ill-fitting suit — technically accurate in origin, completely misleading today. The airline has grown into a proper hybrid operation with a narrow-body network spanning Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia, and on several of those routes, it's selling private suites with sliding doors on a Boeing 737.

That last part deserves repeating. Sliding doors. On a narrowbody.

The catch — and there's always one — is that Flydubai operates three distinct Business Class products across its fleet, and the gap between the best and the worst is enormous. Book the wrong aircraft and you're in a standard recliner. Book the right one and you're in a fully enclosed suite that would look at home on a widebody long-haul jet. Knowing the difference before you buy is the whole game.

Cabin and seats: three very different products

Business Suite

Flydubai's Business Suite is the headline act, and it earns that status. Fitted to select Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, the cabin runs in a 1-1 herringbone layout — every single seat has direct aisle access, no climbing over anyone.

Each suite is fully enclosed with a sliding privacy door. The seat converts into a fully lie-flat bed. Personal storage is generous, and the entertainment screen is large enough to actually watch a film on rather than squinting at a tablet-sized panel. For a narrowbody aircraft, this is a genuinely impressive product, and I'll say plainly: it competes with what many full-service carriers offer on regional widebody routes.

Availability is limited. This configuration appears on a small number of aircraft and tends to show up on high-demand European routes and premium regional corridors. When you see it on the seat map, book it without hesitation.

Lie-flat "Throne" cabin

This is the product most Business Class passengers encounter on Flydubai's longer routes, and it's still very good.

The cabin holds 10 seats in a staggered 2-2, 1-1, 2-2 configuration. Every seat converts into a fully lie-flat bed, which makes this a legitimate option for overnight flying. The layout alternates between paired and solo positions depending on the row.

The standout seats here are 2B and 2E — the "Throne" seats in Row 2. They sit completely alone, with large console tables on both sides, no neighbor within arm's reach, and more personal storage than you'll realistically need. These are the best seats in the entire Flydubai fleet, full stop. If you're booking this cabin, go straight to Row 2.

This cabin is found across:

• Boeing 737 MAX 9
• Retrofitted Boeing 737-800 aircraft (this is the tricky one — some older 800s have been updated with lie-flat seats, some haven't)

Routes to Europe, Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Central Asia are the most likely to carry this configuration.

Regional Business Class

On shorter routes — GCC, Middle East, short South Asia hops — Flydubai operates a traditional 2-2 recliner cabin with 12 seats total. Wide leather seats, reasonable pitch, attentive service. Fine for a 90-minute flight. Not suitable for sleeping, not in the same conversation as the other two products.

This appears on non-retrofitted Boeing 737-800s and some regionally-configured MAX aircraft.

How to identify the right seat before booking

Aircraft type alone won't save you here, because retrofitted 737-800s look identical on a booking page to non-retrofitted ones. The seat map is the only reliable tool.

• 1-1 layout = Business Suite
• 10-seat cabin with solo seats in Row 2 = Lie-Flat Throne
• 12-seat 2-2 layout = regional recliner

In-flight entertainment and connectivity

Both the Business Suite and the Lie-Flat Throne cabin come with large high-definition touchscreens, responsive interfaces, and a solid content library — movies, TV, music, games. Noise-canceling headphones are provided. The system is genuinely good for a narrowbody operation and doesn't feel like an afterthought.

Regional recliner seats get smaller screens but the same content library, which is a reasonable compromise given the short flight times involved.

Wi-Fi is available on most newer aircraft. On flagship routes, Business Class passengers typically get complimentary access — confirm this at booking because it's not universal across every route. On other aircraft, Wi-Fi is purchasable, priced by duration and data. USB charging and full power outlets are standard at every Business Class seat, which matters more than most people admit when you're trying to arrive with a working laptop.

Dining experience

Flydubai's Business Class dining on lie-flat and suite-equipped aircraft is properly multi-course: Arabic mezze or international starters, a choice of hot mains, dessert, and a curated drinks list that includes champagne, wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic options. The Middle Eastern influence on the menu is genuine rather than tokenistic — the mezze in particular tends to be well-executed.

Service pacing is attentive without being intrusive, which is harder to pull off than it sounds on a narrowbody with limited galley space.

On regional recliner routes, the meal service is simplified but still sits well above typical short-haul catering. You get a plated meal and a full beverage offering rather than a bag of pretzels and an apologetic shrug. It remains a premium experience even when abbreviated.

Amenities

On lie-flat and suite aircraft, Flydubai provides quality bedding — pillow, blanket, the works — along with slippers and an amenity kit with skincare essentials on longer overnight routes. Storage in both premium cabin types is thoughtfully designed, with dedicated compartments for shoes, small bags, and personal items.

Noise-canceling headphones are standard across all Business Class configurations.

Regional recliner passengers get a reduced but still respectable amenity setup. The service quality from the crew tends to compensate for whatever the hardware lacks.

Business Class lounges

Dubai International Airport

Flydubai operates mainly from Terminal 2 at DXB, with some coordination through Terminal 3 alongside Emirates. Business Class passengers access dedicated lounges at the terminal — comfortable seating, hot and cold food, beverages, shower facilities, and Wi-Fi. It's not the Emirates First Class Lounge, but it's a proper lounge experience.

If you're connecting between Emirates and Flydubai, a bus transfer between terminals is required. Business Class travelers get a dedicated premium bus — faster, more comfortable, and worth specifying at check-in if you're making that connection under time pressure.

International outstations

Outside Dubai, Flydubai works with contract lounges at international airports. Quality varies, as it always does with contract arrangements, but the standard offering covers:

• Comfortable seating with adequate space
• Complimentary food and beverages (quality ranges from genuinely good to functional)
• Wi-Fi and power for devices
• Shower access at select locations

For a regional carrier operating narrow-body equipment, the lounge network is broader and more consistent than most travelers expect.

What you should actually pay for this

Here's where things get interesting for the cost-conscious executive. Flydubai Business Class on lie-flat routes is already competitively priced against full-service regional carriers.
