How It Works
Airlines track lifetime flown miles separately from annual qualifying miles. Reaching 1 million lifetime miles typically unlocks the lowest lifetime tier, often mirroring mid-level elite status such as Gold or Silver. Higher thresholds — 2 million, 3 million, and 4 million miles — unlock progressively higher permanent tiers, up to the airline's top-tier equivalent. Only miles flown on the airline's own metal or specific partner flights usually count toward the total; miles earned through credit card spending, upgrades, or promotions generally do not qualify.

Delta Air Lines' Million Miler program grants lifetime Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond Medallion status at 1, 2, 3, and 4 million flown miles respectively. American Airlines' AAdvantage Million Miler program awards lifetime Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Executive Platinum status at comparable thresholds. United Airlines offers Lifetime Premier status through its Million Miler program as well.
