The FAA introduced ETOPS in 1985, initially certifying twin-engine jets for 120-minute diversion windows. Before this rule, twin-engine aircraft were restricted to routes within 60 minutes of a suitable airport, forcing airlines to use less efficient three- and four-engine planes on transoceanic routes. How It Works
ETOPS certification is rated in minutes, representing the maximum diversion time an aircraft can fly on one engine to reach an airport. Common ratings include ETOPS-120, ETOPS-180, ETOPS-207, ETOPS-240, and ETOPS-330. A rating of ETOPS-180 permits routes up to three hours from a diversion airport at single-engine cruise speed. Certification requires the aircraft, engines, and airline maintenance program to meet strict reliability standards, including engine-out performance testing and redundant system checks. Regulators evaluate in-flight shutdown rates per engine type before granting or extending ratings.
